Grassy is a small place in Lauderdale County, Alabama. It is also known by the names Arthur or New Salem. This area is called an unincorporated community. This means it does not have its own local government like a city or town.
Grassy is located where two roads meet: State Route 64 and County Highway 89. You can find it east of Lexington and northwest of Anderson. It is also very close to the border of Tennessee.
History of Grassy
How Grassy Got Its Name
The community of Grassy got its name in the 1870s. It was named after a local school called Grassy School. The schoolyard was very grassy, which is how it got its name.
The Arthur Post Office
For a while, Grassy had a post office. This post office was open from 1886 to 1907. During this time, the post office was known by the name Arthur.
Grassy Memorial Chapel
The Grassy Memorial Chapel is an important building in the community. It was first built in 1894. At that time, it was known as the New Salem Presbyterian Church. In 1976, the chapel and its nearby cemetery became owned by the Grassy community.
