The Great Karnak Inscription is an amazing ancient Egyptian text. It is written in hieroglyphs, which are like picture words. This important inscription was made for Merneptah, a powerful pharaoh from the 19th Dynasty of ancient Egypt.

It was found in 1828 or 1829 at Karnak, a famous temple complex. Experts consider it one of the most important texts from ancient Egypt.

What is the Great Karnak Inscription?

This inscription is a very long message carved into stone. It tells us about important events during Pharaoh Merneptah's rule. It is the longest continuous ancient text still existing in Egypt today.

Where Can You Find It?

The Great Karnak Inscription is located at the Karnak temple complex in modern-day Luxor. Specifically, it's on the inside of the east wall of the Cachette Court. This court is part of the Precinct of Amun-Re, a large area within the Karnak temples.

The inscription stretches a long way. It starts near the fourth pylon (a huge gateway) of the main temple. It then continues all the way to the eighth pylon.

Who Discovered and Studied It?

A famous French scholar named Jean-François Champollion first identified this inscription. He was the person who helped us understand hieroglyphs! Later, parts of the inscription were published by Karl Richard Lepsius, a German Egyptologist.

What Does the Inscription Talk About?

The Great Karnak Inscription has 79 lines of text. Sadly, about one-third of it is now missing. But what remains tells an exciting story!

It describes Pharaoh Merneptah's military campaigns. These were like big journeys or battles he led against different groups of people. One of the most important parts talks about his fights against the Sea Peoples.

Who Were the Sea Peoples?

The Sea Peoples were a group of mysterious invaders. They traveled by sea and caused a lot of trouble for ancient civilizations. They attacked many places around the Mediterranean Sea, including Egypt.

The inscription tells us how Merneptah fought against them. It also describes his return to Egypt after these campaigns. He came back with lots of valuable items and many prisoners. This showed his power and success as a pharaoh.
