A map showing the Great Sound in Bermuda.

The Great Sound is a huge ocean inlet, like a big bay, found in Bermuda. Imagine a giant bowl of water connected to the sea! Some scientists think it might be what's left of an ancient volcanic caldera (a sunken volcano top) from a time long, long ago, even before the last Ice Age. However, not all geologists agree on whether the land Bermuda sits on, called the Bermuda Pedestal, was formed by a volcanic hotspot.

Discovering the Great Sound's Location

The Great Sound is a very important part of Bermuda. It takes up a large area in the southwest of the island chain. Think of it as a giant, natural safe place for boats, also known as a harbour. Most of the Great Sound is surrounded by islands. Only its northeast side is open to the wide Atlantic Ocean.

Peninsulas and Harbours

To the south, two smaller pieces of land, called peninsulas, stick out into the Great Sound. These peninsulas help separate the Great Sound from a smaller area of water called the Little Sound. On the eastern side, the Great Sound gets narrower. This narrow part forms Hamilton Harbour. Bermuda's capital city, Hamilton, is located right on the northern shore of this busy harbour.

Islands of the Great Sound

Many islands are found within the Great Sound itself. Most of these islands are located on the southeastern side of the sound. Some of the well-known islands include Darrell's Island, Hawkins Island, Hinson's Island, Long Island, Marshall's Island, and Watling Island.
