Greek League for Women's Rights facts for kids
The Greek League for Women's Rights (Greek: Σύνδεσμος για τα Δικαιώματα της Γυναίκας) is an important Greek group that works for women's rights. It was started in 1920 in Athens, the capital of Greece. The main goal of the League was to help women get political rights, including the right to vote.
This organization is connected to the International Alliance of Women. It is still active today, continuing its work for equality.
How the Fight for Women's Rights Began
Even before the League was formed, people in Greece were working to help women. This started after Greece became an independent country in 1828. Many early efforts focused on improving education for girls and women.
For example, in 1872, Kalliopi Kehajia (who lived from 1839 to 1905) created the Society for Promoting Women's Education. Later, Kalliroi Parren (1861-1940) started two groups: the Union for the Emancipation of Women in 1894 and the Union of Greek Women in 1896. These groups helped women but did not directly ask for the right to vote, which was a very debated topic at the time.
In 1911, many women's and children's charity groups joined together to form the National Council of Greek Women. This showed how many people wanted to help women.
Women also made progress in education. They were allowed to study at the University of Athens. Also in 1911, the Lyceum of Greek Women was founded. This group aimed to celebrate Greece's rich history and culture.
It was not until 1920 that Avra Theodoropoulou started the Greek League for Women's Rights. This new group specifically focused on getting political rights for women, especially the right to vote.
What the League Achieved
The Greek League for Women's Rights was very busy in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1950s. They worked hard to change laws that were unfair to women. They also helped improve family laws, making them more equal for everyone.
Since 1923, the League has published its own feminist magazine called Women's Struggle. This was also the year they joined the International Alliance of Women.
In 1982, the League created the Centre for Documentation and Study of Women's Problems. This center helps to collect information and research issues important to women.
