The green-tailed towhee (Pipilo chlorurus) is a small, colorful bird. It belongs to the American sparrow family, called Passerellidae. Even though it is the smallest type of towhee, it is still one of the larger sparrows!
What Does It Look Like?
This bird is easy to spot because of the bright green stripes on the edge of its wings. It also has a clear white throat and a reddish-brown cap on its head. The green-tailed towhee measures about 7.25 in (18.4 cm) long. It weighs around 29 g (1.0 oz).
Where Do They Live?
Green-tailed towhees spend their breeding season in most of the western United States. When winter comes, they fly south to Mexico and the southern parts of the Southwestern United States.
Behavior and Habitat
This bird is usually quite calm and not easily scared. However, it often stays hidden under bushes. You can usually find them in places with lots of sagebrush and other similar bushes. Because they like to stay hidden, it can be uncommon to see them, even though they are fairly common birds.
