Green Gallery (Milwaukee) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Green Gallery is an art gallery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It shows contemporary art, which means art made in our time. The gallery was started by John Riepenhoff in 2003. It's a place where new artists can show their work, and people can see art from all over the world.

History of The Green Gallery

John Riepenhoff began The Green Gallery in the attic of his apartment in Milwaukee's Riverwest area. He named it "Green Gallery" as a nod to another famous gallery from the 1960s. It was also a bit of a joke because the attic was actually sky blue! This name was meant to make people think and talk about art. John wanted to help new artists get noticed. After two years, he moved the gallery to a bigger industrial space, still in Riverwest.

The Green Gallery West

In July 2012, the original gallery, then called The Green Gallery West, had to close. A big fire broke out in the building. Sadly, much of the artwork stored there was damaged or destroyed. Many artists who lived or worked in other parts of the building also lost a lot of their art.

The Green Gallery East

In January 2009, John Riepenhoff opened a second gallery with his business partner, Jake Palmert. This new space was on Milwaukee's East Side and was called The Green Gallery East. The main goal of this new gallery was to create an easy-to-reach place. It would show art from artists in the Midwest and bring famous artists from other countries to Milwaukee.
