The Green Gallery: A Place for Art
The Green Gallery began in 2003. Its founder, John Riepenhoff, started it in the attic of his apartment in Milwaukee's Riverwest neighborhood. He named it "Green Gallery" as a nod to another famous gallery from the 1960s. It was also a bit of a joke because the attic was actually sky blue! This name made people think and ask questions, which John liked. He wanted to show art from new and exciting artists. After two years, the gallery moved to a bigger space in Riverwest.
Two Gallery Locations
Over time, The Green Gallery grew and even had two locations.
The Green Gallery West
The first main gallery was known as The Green Gallery West. Sadly, in July 2012, this location had to close because of a big fire in the building. Some of the artwork stored there was damaged.
The Green Gallery East
In January 2009, John Riepenhoff opened a second gallery with his business partner, Jake Palmert. This new spot was on Milwaukee's East Side and was called The Green Gallery East. The original gallery then became known as The Green Gallery West. The main goal of The Green Gallery East was to create an easy-to-reach place. It aimed to show art from talented artists from the Midwest and also bring famous artists from around the world to Milwaukee.
