The Green Howards Regimental Museum tells the story of the Green Howards, a famous British Army infantry regiment. An infantry regiment is a group of soldiers who fight mainly on foot.
You can find the museum in the old Trinity Church. It is right in the middle of the market place in Richmond, England. The Green Howards regiment joined with two other Yorkshire regiments in 2006. They all became part of The Yorkshire Regiment.
History of the Museum
The museum first opened its doors in 1922. It was located at Richmond Barracks back then. Later, in 1973, the museum moved to its current home.
Its new location is in the heart of Richmond's market place. The museum holds many items that show the regiment's history. These items cover more than 300 years of stories and events.
Amazing Medals on Display
The museum has a very special collection of medals. There are 3,750 medals and awards given to soldiers from the regiment. Among these are 16 Victoria Crosses (VCs) and three George Crosses.
The Victoria Cross is the highest award for bravery in the British military. The George Cross is the highest award for bravery not in battle.
Victoria Cross Heroes
One of the Victoria Crosses belongs to Lieutenant Colonel Oliver Cyril Spencer Watson. He earned his VC for incredible bravery in France in 1918. He led attacks and organized his men under heavy fire. He sadly died while protecting his soldiers during a retreat.
Another VC on display belongs to Private Henry Tandey. He was awarded his Victoria Cross for bravery in France in 1918. This was during a counter-attack after the capture of Marcoing. Tandey also received other important medals. These include the DCM and the MM.
