Green Patch is a small place on East Falkland, which is one of the Falkland Islands. It is located on the northeast coast, right on the southern edge of Berkeley Sound. Green Patch is just a few miles southeast of Port Louis, near Port Louis Harbour. From Green Patch, you can see Long Island and Hog Island.

Land Ownership in Green Patch

For a long time, most of the land in the Falkland Islands was owned by a single large company called the Falkland Islands Company. This meant it was hard for local people to own their own farms or land. To help fix this problem, an important experiment happened at Green Patch.

A New Opportunity for Land Ownership

The Falkland Islands Government wanted to give more people a chance to own land and have their own part in the economy. So, in 1980, the Falkland Islands Company sold its large Green Patch area to the government. This area was about 72,000 acres (which is about 291 square kilometers).

The government then divided this big piece of land into six smaller parts. These smaller parts were then leased, or rented, to people who applied for them. The people who leased the land also had the option to buy it completely after twenty years. This project aimed to help more islanders become landowners and build their own futures.
