The Green River Crib Dam is an old dam built in the early 1800s. You can find it on the Green River in Guilford, Vermont. This dam helped power small factories long ago. It's special because it's one of the few crib dams left in Vermont. A crib dam is made mostly from logs and rocks. In 1995, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important historical site.

About the Green River Dam
The Green River Crib Dam is in western Guilford. It sits just upstream from the Green River Covered Bridge. The dam is about 110 feet (34 meters) long. It stands about 10.5 feet (3.2 meters) tall. The dam stretches across the river in a curved shape.
What is a Crib Dam Made Of?
This dam is built mostly from logs and rubble. It also has wooden planks on its front. The sides of the dam, called abutments, are now made of stone and concrete. On the east side, a wall extends towards the bridge. This wall was once part of a mill building.
History of the Dam and Mills
People first wrote about a dam here in 1811. At that time, a man named Jonah Cutting had a paper and linseed oil mill. Some parts of the dam you see today might be from that very first dam.
Changes Over Time
By 1856, the mill was only making paper. In 1869, a big flood hit the area. This flood badly damaged the mill. It also washed away the bridge nearby.
In 1871, Henry Stowe built a new mill. It was a lumber and grist mill. This mill worked until 1918, when a fire destroyed it.
Who Owns the Dam Now?
Since then, private owners have taken care of the dam. It is a beautiful part of the small Green River village. It also reminds everyone of the area's industrial past.
The Green River Village Preservation Trust now owns the dam. This group is a non-profit organization. They work to keep the dam and its millpond safe. They also own and care for the church and village green in the heart of Green River Village. You can learn more at greenrivervillage.org.
