Greendale is a quiet countryside area in the Selwyn District. It is part of the Canterbury region, which is located on New Zealand's South Island.
Some of the very first farmers in Greendale helped shape the area. One important farmer was Thomas William Adams. He was a pioneer in growing trees and also helped start education in the community. Another early farmer was Charles Early, who moved to Greendale in 1876.
Greendale became well-known on September 4, 2010. On that day, it was the location of the strongest earthquake shaking ever recorded in New Zealand at the time. The ground moved with a force 1.25 times that of gravity. Later, even stronger shaking was recorded during the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake in Heathcote Valley.
