Greendale was once a small community located in the Uinta Mountains of Daggett County, Utah. It was mainly a ranching area.

Life in Greendale

In the early to mid-1900s, Greendale was home to a few families. These families were mostly homesteaders. They ran small cattle ranches in the remote and rugged mountains.

There were enough families in Greendale to have a one-room school. This school was open during the 1920s and 1930s. It served the children of the ranching families. A United States post office also operated in Greendale for a short time, from 1915 to 1916.

Changes and Abandonment

Big changes came to the Greendale area in the 1950s and 1960s. This was because the Flaming Gorge Dam was built nearby. The construction brought the first paved roads to the region.

The value of land in Greendale also went up. This encouraged most of the ranching families to sell their properties. Because of these changes, the community of Greendale slowly became a ghost town.

Greendale Today

Today, some of the land that was once part of the original homesteads is used for summer homes. These are places where people stay during warmer months.

One important spot is the former Oscar Swett ranch. The United States Forest Service now takes care of this ranch. They keep it as an interpretive site. This means visitors can learn about the history of the area. The Swett Ranch is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This shows it is an important historical place.
