Building History
Work on this courthouse, which was the third one for Greene County, started in 1901. The architects, Samuel Hannaford and Sons, finished building it in 1902. It cost about $191,746 to build, which was a lot of money back then!
Interestingly, Samuel Hannaford also designed the Cincinnati City Hall. That building looks very similar to the Greene County Courthouse, even though it was built 13 years earlier. It's cool to see how the same architect used a similar style for different important buildings.
The Amazing Clock Tower
One of the coolest parts of the courthouse is its tall clock tower. This tower stands about 145 feet (44 meters) high. Inside the tower is a huge clock that came all the way from Michigan.
The clock itself is very heavy, weighing 4,500 pounds (about 2,041 kilograms). Its frame, which holds it up, weighs another 3,000 pounds (about 1,360 kilograms). The clock bells ring every hour to tell everyone the time. For many years, before 1941, a worker had to ring the bells by hand every hour. But in 1941, the clock was made electric, so now it rings all by itself!
