Greenwood, Clarksville, Tennessee facts for kids
Greenwood is a neighborhood located in the southern part of Clarksville, Tennessee, United States. It is one of the oldest areas in the city. Greenwood is found just south of downtown Clarksville. It is bordered by South Riverside Drive on the west and the Mason Rudolph golf course on the east. Ashland City Road (also known as US-41A Bypass/TN-12) is to the south, and Crossland Avenue is to the north.
The neighborhood is home to the Greenwood Cemetery. This cemetery is one of the oldest in Tennessee. Famous people are buried here, including Frank Sutton, an actor known for playing Sgt. Carter on the TV show Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.. Also, Olympic gold medalist Wilma Rudolph is buried in a smaller cemetery next to the Mason Rudolph golf course.
Greenwood is also where you can find the Montgomery County Alternative School. The main office for the CMCSS is here too. You can also visit the Clarksville-Montgomery County Library in Greenwood.
History of Greenwood
In the early 1900s, Greenwood began to grow as a place for families to live. Many of the houses built in the 1950s, called bungalows, are still standing today.
The first Clarksville High School was built in Greenwood in 1907. It was located at the corner of Madison Street and Greenwood Avenue. The old high school building is still there, but it has been changed into apartments.
Getting Around Greenwood
Greenwood is well-connected by different ways to travel. Several bus routes from Clarksville Transit System (CTS) serve the area. These buses help people get to different parts of the city.
US Route 41-A runs along the southern edge of Greenwood. This road connects directly to I-24, a major highway. For air travel, people in Clarksville use Outlaw Field airport for regional flights. For international travel, they use Nashville International Airport.
