How Greg & Steve Started

Greg Scelsa and Steve Millang have known each other since high school. In 1968, they moved from their hometown of Newport Beach, California to Los Angeles. They wanted to be closer to the music industry.

They started working as assistants in special education programs. This meant they helped children who needed extra support. Many of these children had emotional or behavioral challenges. Greg and Steve began to play music for these kids.

They soon discovered that their music helped children with conditions like autism. The music had a very positive effect on them. For several years, they performed their music programs in different schools.

Creating Youngheart Records

In 1975, Greg and Steve decided to start their own record company. They called it Youngheart Records. They made a recording of their music. Then, they shared it at a big meeting for teachers and caregivers. This was the National Association for the Education of Young Children convention.

People at the conference loved their music! Because of this positive reaction, Scelsa and Millang officially formed "Greg & Steve." They began selling their recordings to schools and educators.

Growing Their Music Business

In 1991, Greg and Steve sold most of their company, Youngheart Records. They sold it to a company called Creative Teaching Press. This change helped them sell their music in more places.

They could now sell their albums in big stores like Barnes & Noble. This also allowed Greg and Steve to spend more time making music. They didn't have to focus as much on running the business.

Awards and Recognition

Greg & Steve have received many awards for their music. By 2002, they had won nine Parents' Choice Awards. These awards recognize excellent products for children.

In 2010, their album Jumpin' and Jammin' was nominated for a Grammy Award. It was nominated in the "Best Musical Album for Children" category. This shows how much their music is loved and respected.
