After high school, he went to the University of California, Berkeley. He graduated in 1987 with a bachelor's degree in English. While in college, Greg Gutfeld started to think differently about politics. He once said that being around people with different political views helped him form his own ideas. He learned that both very liberal and very conservative people can sometimes be too strict with their beliefs. This helped him become a libertarian, which means he believes in a lot of personal freedom and less government control.

During his time there, the number of people who read the magazine grew a lot. He even created some buzz by doing a unique publicity stunt at a magazine conference.
From 2005 to 2008, Gutfeld was one of the first writers for The Huffington Post, an online news and blog site. He often wrote commentaries about his colleagues there.
