Gregory John Stanton (born March 8, 1970) is an American lawyer and politician. He currently serves as a U.S. representative for Arizona, a role he has held since 2019.
Before joining the U.S. House of Representatives, Greg Stanton was the mayor of Phoenix. He served as mayor from 2012 to 2018. He was also a member of the Phoenix City Council from 2000 to 2009. He is a member of the Democratic Party.

Early Life and Education
Greg Stanton was born in Long Island, New York. His family later moved to Arizona. He graduated from Cortez High School in west Phoenix in 1988.
He then went to Marquette University. In 1992, he earned a bachelor's degree in history and political science. He was also part of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. In 1995, Stanton earned his law degree (J.D.) from the University of Michigan Law School.
After law school, he worked as an education attorney from 1995 to 2000. Later, in 2014, he also became a professor at Arizona Summit Law School.
Political Career Highlights
Serving on the Phoenix City Council
Greg Stanton began his political career on the Phoenix City Council. He was elected to represent the 6th district in 2000, 2001, and 2005. He served on the council until 2009. This district included areas like the Biltmore Area and Ahwatukee.
Becoming Mayor of Phoenix
Stanton served as the mayor of Phoenix from 2012 to 2018. He was first elected mayor in 2011. In that election, he and Republican candidate Wes Gullett were the top two choices. Stanton received about 38% of the votes in the primary election.
As mayor, Stanton worked to protect city services. For example, he spoke out against federal budget cuts in 2013. He met with members of Congress to discuss these issues.
He was reelected as mayor in 2015. In 2017, Governing magazine recognized him as a Public Official of the Year. This was for his efforts to improve public transportation, like expanding light rail, bike lanes, and sidewalks. He also worked to reduce the city's greenhouse gas emissions. Stanton resigned from his mayoral position on May 29, 2018, to run for Congress.

Congressional Elections
Greg Stanton decided to run for the U.S. House of Representatives in 2018. The previous representative, Kyrsten Sinema, chose to run for the U.S. Senate. Stanton won the election for the open House seat. He defeated Republican Steve Ferrara with 61% of the vote. During his campaign, he highlighted his experience as mayor.
He was reelected in 2020, winning with 61% of the vote again. In 2022, he was reelected with 56% of the vote. He currently represents Arizona's 4th congressional district.
