Gregg, which was once called Greenleaf, is a small, quiet place in Madera County, California. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's managed directly by the county.

Gregg is located about 2.5 miles (4.0 km) south-southeast of a place called Trigo. It sits at an elevation of 299 feet (91 meters) above sea level. This community grew up along the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad line, which was very important for travel and trade in the past.

A Look at Gregg's History

Gregg has a simple but interesting history, especially when it comes to its name and how people communicated there. Like many small communities, its story is often tied to its post office.

How Gregg Got Its Name

Before it was known as Gregg, this area had a different name: Greenleaf. The community's first post office actually opened under the name Greenleaf in 1904. However, it only stayed open for about a year, closing its doors in 1905.

Later, in 1917, a new post office opened in the same area, but this time it was called Gregg. This new name stuck, and the community has been known as Gregg ever since. The Gregg post office closed for a short time in 1928 and then closed permanently in 1931.

The Importance of Railroads

Gregg's location along the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad was very important. In the early 1900s, railroads were like the highways of today. They were crucial for transporting goods, mail, and people across the country. Small communities often grew up around railroad stops because they provided a way for people to connect with the outside world and for businesses to thrive.
