Early Life and Training
Gregorio Lazzarini was born in Venice. His father was a barber. Gregorio also had a sister named Elisabetta Lazzarini, who was also a skilled painter.
Gregorio learned to paint from several different artists. First, he trained with Francesco Rosa, a painter from Genoa. Then, he studied with Girolamo Forabosco. Finally, he learned in the studio of Pietro della Vecchia. These different teachers helped him develop his own artistic style.
A Talented Teacher
In 1687, Lazzarini became a member of the painters' guild in Venice. This meant he was officially recognized as a professional artist. He worked in Venice for most of his life, staying active until at least 1715. He painted many, many artworks during his career.
Lazzarini was known for being a very patient teacher. He taught his students a wide range of artistic styles. This helped them learn how to paint mythological and historical stories. A writer from his time, Vincenzo da Canal, said that young artists who wanted to succeed chose Lazzarini as their teacher. Besides Giambattista Tiepolo, other students of Lazzarini included Gaspare Diziani and Bartolomeo Ignazio Capello.
Famous Artworks and Style
Some of Lazzarini's paintings can be found in important places in Venice. For example, some of his works decorate the Sala dello Scrutinio (Voting Hall) in the Doge’s Palace. You can also see a group of his paintings inside the Sala San Tommaso at the basilica of Santi Giovanni e Paolo.
One of his major paintings is called The Charity of San Lorenzo Giustiniani. This artwork was made for the Patriarchal house at San Pietro di Castello. Lazzarini's painting style was very academic, meaning it followed traditional art rules. His style did not change much throughout his career. He combined the strong, solid look of Emilian painting from the Baroque period with the rich, vibrant colors of the Venetian school.
Lazzarini passed away on November 10, 1730. He had moved to Villabona Veronese (now Villa d'Adige) in September to stay with his brother, who was a local priest there.
