Gaspare Diziani (born 1689 – died 1767) was a talented Italian painter. He lived during the late Baroque and Rococo art periods. He mostly worked in the Veneto region of Italy, but also in cities like Dresden and Munich. One of his paintings is the largest artwork in the famous Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.

About Gaspare Diziani

Gaspare Diziani started learning to paint in his hometown of Belluno, Italy. His first teacher was Antonio Lazzarini. Later, he moved to Venice to study with Gregorio Lazzarini and then Sebastiano Ricci. Another famous painter, Giambattista Tiepolo, was also studying around the same time.

Between 1710 and 1720, Diziani painted several important artworks. These included a painting of Mary Magdalene for a church in Belluno and Entry into Jerusalem for San Teodoro in Venice. He also created three wall paintings about the Life of Saint Helena in the Scuola del Vin in Venice. Diziani was known for painting quickly and skillfully. His early sketches show how he used fast, energetic brushstrokes.

Diziani also worked as a painter for theaters and operas. He designed scenery in Venice, Munich (in 1717), and later in Dresden. In 1726, a powerful church leader, Cardinal Ottoboni, invited Diziani to Rome. There, he painted a "magnificent decoration" for the church of San Lorenzo in Damaso. We only know about this work from an old drawing of it.

In the Ca' Rezzonico museum in Venice, there is a special ceiling painting by Diziani. It is called The Triumph of Poetry. This painting shows Poetry surrounded by other arts like Painting, Architecture, Music, and Sculpture. It uses a technique called sotto in su, which makes it look like the figures are floating above you.

Diziani's Influence and Students

Both Gaspare Diziani and Giambattista Tiepolo painted many artworks. Diziani often created playful paintings for bedrooms, small rooms, and temporary theater sets. These were usually for private homes. Tiepolo, who was more famous, painted large ceiling decorations with religious, mythical, and allegorical themes.

Diziani's art shows some influence from Tiepolo. However, Diziani's colors were not as light as Tiepolo's, who learned a lot from the frescoes of Luca Giordano.

Some of Diziani's students included Pietro Edwards and Jacopo Marieschi. His son, Antonio Diziani, also became a painter. Antonio mostly painted detailed views of Venice, both inside and outside buildings. Gaspare Diziani passed away in Venice.

Public Exhibitions

One of Diziani's paintings, "The Sacrifice of Isaac," was shown at the Muscarelle Museum of Art. This was part of an exhibition called "Curators at Work III" from April to June 2013.
