Grendon and Doddershall Woods are mainly made up of broadleaved oak trees. They grow on the clay soil found in north Buckinghamshire. Underneath the tall oaks, you'll find smaller trees and bushes. These include hazel and blackthorn, which add to the woodland's rich plant life.

The woods have a diverse range of plants. You can spot beautiful wildflowers like primrose and wood anemone. These flowers add splashes of color to the forest floor. Small streams flow through the woods, creating wet areas. There are also wide, open paths called 'rides'. Both the streams and rides provide different types of homes for various creatures.

Grendon and Doddershall Woods are a paradise for butterflies. There are 35 different species of butterflies living here! One very special butterfly is the rare black hairstreak. It's exciting to see such a unique insect in its natural home.

The woods were once home to five types of fritillary butterflies. Sadly, some of these haven't been seen since the late 1970s. This shows why protecting these habitats is so important. Besides butterflies, the woods are also a great place for birds. Nightingales, known for their beautiful songs, come here to breed.
