Grevillea kedumbensis is a special type of shrub that grows only in a small area of the Great Dividing Range in central New South Wales, Australia. This unique plant is found nowhere else in the world!

About the Grevillea kedumbensis

How it Looks

The Grevillea kedumbensis grows as a low shrub. It can be anywhere from 20 centimeters (about 8 inches) to 1 meter (about 3 feet) tall. It has a strong, woody base.

Its leaves are narrow and shaped like an oval or a spoon. They are about 1 to 3 centimeters (0.4 to 1.2 inches) long. The leaves are also quite thin, only about 0.1 to 0.5 centimeters wide. Their edges are smooth.

Its Flowers

The flowers of Grevillea kedumbensis grow in groups called inflorescences, which means "flower heads." Each flower head has about 12 to 20 individual flowers.

These flowers mostly appear in winter and spring. However, you might see them at any time of the year. The main parts of the flowers are a creamy color. The long, thin parts (called styles) are reddish-brown. The parts that hold the pollen are green.

Its Discovery and Name

This plant was first collected by a person named Alec Blombery in 1986. Later that same year, another person named Don McGillivray described it. He first thought it was a type of Grevillea obtusiflora.

But in 1994, two other experts, Peter Olde and Neil Marriott, decided it was different enough to be its own species. So, they gave it the name Grevillea kedumbensis. They also noticed it looked a lot like another plant called Grevillea mucronulata. This made them think it might be related to that plant too.
