The Grey Havens Inn is a historic hotel located in Georgetown, Maine. It was built in 1904. This inn is one of the best examples of old hotels found along the coast of Maine. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. The inn has thirteen guest rooms and a restaurant. It also has docks for boats and amazing views of Harmon's Harbor.
About the Grey Havens Inn
The Grey Havens Inn sits on the eastern side of Georgetown island. It is close to the entrance of Harmon's Harbor. This harbor is a small inlet off the Sheepscot River. The inn is built on a small hill. This gives it wonderful views of the harbor and the river.
Building Style and Look
The inn is a two-and-a-half story building made of wood. It is built in a style called "Shingle Style." This means its outside is covered completely in wooden shingles. The front of the building faces east, looking out at the water.
The roof is a special type called a gambrel roof. It has pointed windows, called gabled dormers, sticking out of it. There are also two round towers, called turrets, at the front corners. These turrets have pointy, cone-shaped roofs. A wide porch goes all the way across the front and around both sides of the inn. Inside, many of the original wooden details are still there.
History of the Inn
The Grey Havens Inn was built in 1904. It was designed to be a summer hotel. Hotels like this were once very common along the coast of Maine. Walter Reid built the inn. It was first called "Seguinland."
Walter Reid is famous in the area for giving land further south in Georgetown. This land is now a park called Reid State Park. Walter Reid's family home is also nearby. It is now a bed and breakfast, which is like a small hotel.
