Greyfriars, St Andrews facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Greyfriars was a special religious building in St Andrews, Fife, Scotland. It was home to a group of Franciscan friars, also known as "grey friars" because of their simple grey robes. These friars were part of the "Observant" branch, which meant they followed their religious rules very strictly.

How Greyfriars Began

Greyfriars was started by Bishop James Kennedy sometime between 1463 and 1466. He was a very important religious leader. Even though he passed away in May 1465, he definitely began the project.

After Bishop Kennedy, another important leader named Patrick Graham gave more gifts to help the friary. These gifts, like money or land, were officially confirmed by King James III on December 21, 1479.

Life at Greyfriars

When Greyfriars was first built, it was planned to house 24 friars. These friars lived together, prayed, and served their community. However, by the time of the Scottish Reformation, which was a big change in religion in Scotland, there were only about six friars living there.

The End of Greyfriars

Greyfriars faced tough times. In July 1547, the building was attacked and burned by an army led by Norman Leslie.

Later, in May 1559, the friary was handed over to the local town leaders, called "burgh magistrates." Around June 14, 1559, Greyfriars was completely destroyed. This destruction was done either by the Reformers, who wanted to change the church, or by the town leaders themselves.
