The Plinia spirito-santensis is a special type of plant. It is also known as jabuticaba peluda de cruz, which means "hairy cross jaboticaba". In the USA, people often call it Grimal. This plant belongs to the Myrtaceae family, which includes many well-known trees and shrubs.

This plant is found only in a specific part of eastern Brazil. It grows in broad-leafed coastal forests, usually at higher altitudes. It can be a shrub or a small tree. It typically grows to be between 3 and 6 metres tall.

Discovering the Grimal Plant

The Grimal plant is named after Adolf Grimal. He was a person who collected this plant in South America. He then brought it to Florida in the United States. This helped the plant become known in other parts of the world.

What Does the Grimal Plant Look Like?

The Plinia spirito-santensis is a semideciduous plant. This means it might lose some of its leaves during certain times of the year. It produces tasty berries that are deep reddish-purple in colour. These berries can grow up to 30 millimetres wide.

The Unique Cross on the Fruit

One very interesting thing about the fruit is a small cross shape. This cross is found at the very top of each berry. This unique mark is actually where the name "hairy cross jaboticaba" comes from. It makes the fruit easy to identify.
