The Albert, once known as the Griswold Building, is a building in Downtown Detroit, Michigan. It is located at 1214 Griswold Street. This building was named after its famous architect, Albert Kahn.

It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. This means it is an important historical place in the United States. The Albert is also part of the Capitol Park Historic District, which is an area with many historic buildings. In 2014, the building was updated and turned into apartments.

Building History

The Griswold Building was first built in 1929. It was designed to be an office building where people worked. Before the building was constructed, a place called the Miles Theatre stood on the same spot.

Later, in the 1980s, the building was changed. It became a place for people to live, specifically for senior citizens. In the fall of 2014, the building got another big update. This renovation changed the senior housing into 127 modern apartments for anyone to rent. The first floor of the building also got 14,000 square feet of space for shops and businesses.

Building Design

The Albert building is 12 floors tall. It has 127 apartments or rooms inside. The famous architect Albert Kahn designed this tall building. He used a style called Art Moderne.

This building is special because it shows how Albert Kahn's design style changed. It marks a move from his earlier Art Deco designs to the Art Moderne style. The front of the building is split into two main parts. The bottom three floors are covered with light-colored stone called limestone. This part has nine sections, or bays. The top nine floors are made of brick. The middle five sections of these upper floors are set back a little from the rest of the building.
