Grogue is a special traditional drink from Cape Verde, an island country in Africa. It's also known as grogu or grogo. This drink is made from sugarcane, using old, traditional methods. Almost all the sugarcane grown in Cape Verde is used to make grogue. The sugarcane is pressed using a special machine called a trapiche.

Grogue is also used to make a Cape Verdean mixed drink called ponche. This drink is similar to "punch" and includes lime and molasses. It's a bit like the poncha drink from the island of Madeira.

Where Grogue is Made

Grogue and sugarcane are mostly produced on two islands in Cape Verde: Santo Antão and Santiago. On Santo Antão, you'll find a lot of grogue making in places like Ribeira do Paul and Ribeira da Cruz.

Traditional Uses

People in Cape Verde have used grogue in traditional ways for a long time. Sometimes, herbs like common rue, rosemary, or anise are added to it. These mixtures are part of old traditions. There's even a special preparation made with percebes, which are also known as goose neck barnacles.

Modern Changes

Because grogue is made using old, traditional methods, there can be many different kinds. The government of Cape Verde is working with a European company to introduce grogue to new markets. They plan to create a high-quality version called 'Grogue Official'.

In some places that welcome tourists, grogue is used to make a drink called caipirinha.
