The Ground Combat Vehicle (GCV) was a special project by the U.S. Army. It aimed to create new, strong military vehicles. These vehicles were meant to replace older ones that move on tracks or wheels. The GCV project was part of a bigger plan called BCT Modernization. The Army hoped to build the first GCV vehicles by 2015 and start using them by 2017. This project took over from an earlier plan called Future Combat Systems, which was stopped.

Designing the GCV

The GCV was planned to be a family of vehicles. They would all be built using one or more similar main parts. This would make them easier to build and maintain.

The GCV was designed to be connected to a network.

The GCV was meant to have a very advanced communication system. This system would allow it to share information quickly. It would connect with other vehicles and soldiers.

The vehicle would be very heavy and large. Even so, it needed to be moved easily. It had to fit on airplanes, trains, and ships. The GCV was also designed to move well off-road. It also needed to use fuel efficiently.

The exact types of weapons for the GCV were kept secret. The Army only said it would have ways to help with missions. These would include both deadly and non-deadly tools. They would be used in different kinds of areas.

The Army wanted the GCV to have strong protection from bombs. It also wanted the vehicle to be able to destroy enemy missiles.

Different GCV Types

The U.S. Army wanted two main types of GCVs first. One was a troop carrier. The other was called a "secondary vehicle." The Army planned to ask for more types later on.

The Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) was planned to replace several older vehicles. It would take the place of the M113 APC by 2018. Later, it would replace the M2 Bradley and the Stryker ICV. The IFV was designed to carry a crew of three people. It would also carry a squad of nine soldiers.

Secondary Vehicle Details

The "secondary vehicle" was mentioned in official documents. However, no specific details were ever shared about what this vehicle would do. Its purpose remained unknown to the public.
