The Groveport United Methodist Church is a special old church in Groveport, Ohio. This church has a long history, starting way back in the 1830s. The building you see today was finished in the early 1900s. It's so important that it has been named a historic site.

A Look Back: The Church's History

The story of this church began even before Groveport was officially named. In the early 1800s, two other churches, Hopewell and Asbury Methodist Episcopal Churches, were formed nearby.

In 1836, some members from these churches who lived near what would become Groveport decided to start their own church. They called it the Groveport Methodist Church. By the end of that year, they had built their first church building. The bricks for this building were even made right there on the church's land!

By 1851, the church had grown so much that the first building was too small. The members raised money to build a second, larger church. This new building served the community for many years.

Building the Current Church

The second church building was used until 1908. That's when the third and current church building was completed. A man named Charles Rarey helped oversee the construction. He even left his job as a court clerk to work on the church full-time!

This new building cost about $25,000 to build. Just like the first church, its bricks were made locally in Groveport.

What Makes the Church Special?

The Groveport Methodist Church is made of brick and sits on a strong limestone foundation. It has a slate roof, which is very durable. You'll notice many beautiful stained glass windows, which are one of the most striking features of the building.

A tall tower with a steep, pointed roof stands at one corner of the church. The other parts of the roof have a classic gable shape. You can see rounded-arch windows and doorways all around the outside, including two on different levels of the tower.

A Recognized Historic Site

Today, Groveport United Methodist Church is still an active part of the United Methodist Church. It belongs to the West Ohio Conference.

In 1995, the church building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's recognized as an important historical place because of its special architecture. It's one of four places in Groveport on this list. The others are the Groveport Log Houses, the Groveport School, and a group of buildings called the Groveport Town Hall Historic Group.
