Gruinard Bay with Gruinard Island and the Summer Isles in the distance

Gruinard Bay is a large, beautiful bay on the west coast of Scotland. It's located about 12 miles north of a place called Poolewe, in an area known as Ross and Cromarty. This bay is famous for its stunning views and the interesting island located just offshore.

Exploring Gruinard Bay's Villages

Gruinard Bay is home to several small communities, mostly found along its eastern side. In the southeast corner, you'll find the tiny village of Little Gruinard. A river with the same name flows into the bay here.

On the western coast, there's a former fishing village called Laide. From Laide, you can look out across the bay towards Gruinard Island. Further north along the west coast, you'll discover more villages like Achgarve, the main village of Mellon Udrigle, and the smaller farming community of Opinan. All these places offer amazing views of the bay and Gruinard Island.

The Geography of Gruinard Bay

Gruinard Bay is shaped by the land around it. To the northeast, it connects with Loch Broom. To the east, it includes the entrance to Little Loch Broom, with a point of land called Static Point further south. On its western side, the bay is bordered by the Rubha Mòr peninsula and Loch Ewe to the southwest.

The bay itself is quite large, measuring about 5.5 miles along its western shore and 4.5 miles on its eastern shore, forming a shape like the letter 'L'.

Right in front of the bay is Gruinard Island, which is about 0.68 miles offshore on the eastern side. You can also see the beautiful Summer Isles in the distance to the northeast.

Three fast-flowing rivers empty into Gruinard Bay:

  • The Little Gruinard river flows for 4 miles from Fionn Loch. It enters the bay near the village of Little Gruinard and the Camas Gaineamhaich beach.
  • The River Gruinard river travels a similar distance from two lochs: the larger Loch Sealga to the east and the smaller Loch Ghiubhsachain to the west. It flows into the bay on the western side of Camas Gaineamhaich beach.
  • The smaller Inverianvie river comes from a small loch called Loch à Mhadaidh Mòr. It enters the bay between the other two rivers.
