Exploring the Summer Isles' Geography
The Summer Isles are an archipelago, which is a fancy word for a group of islands. They are found off the west coast of Scotland.
Tanera Mòr: The Main Island
Tanera Mòr is the biggest island in the Summer Isles. It was the last island in the group to have people living on it all the time. This island used to have a fish farm where they raised Atlantic salmon.
Today, Tanera Mòr offers holiday homes for rent. It also has a small café where visitors can enjoy a snack. The island even had its own special post office for many years. This post office printed its own unique stamps!
There are no roads on Tanera Mòr. The only clear path goes around a calm bay called the Anchorage. You can reach the island by boat from nearby towns like Achiltibuie and Ullapool.

The Summer Isles in Stories and Songs
The beauty of the Summer Isles has inspired many artists. They appear in books, movies, and music.

The Summer Isles' Special Stamps
Since 1970, the Summer Isles have had their own Philatelic Bureau. This bureau creates special stamps for tourists. Visitors can put these stamps on their mail. The mail is then taken to the nearest official post box on the mainland. This makes sending a postcard from the Summer Isles a unique experience!
Local Culture and Music
The musician Mairearad Green grew up in Achiltibuie. This town is on the Coigach peninsula, which looks out over the Summer Isles. She was so inspired by the islands that she even released an album called "Summer Isles."
