The name "the 43" comes from the city's location. It is exactly 43 kilometers along an old railway line. This railway, once called the Ferrocarril Sonora-Baja California, now belongs to Ferromex. It connects Mexicali with other places like Benjamin Hill, Sonora and Guadalajara.
