Mexicali Municipality is a large area in the Mexican state of Baja California. It's like a county or district. The main city and government center is Mexicali.
In 2020, over 1 million people lived here. The municipality covers a huge area of 13,700 square kilometers (about 5,290 square miles). This includes the main city and many smaller towns and communities.
The municipality also includes islands in the Gulf of California. These include the mudflat islands at the mouth of the Colorado River, like Montague Island. It also has Isla Ángel de la Guarda and the islands of San Lorenzo Marine Archipelago National Park. Mexicali is the northernmost municipality in all of Latin America.
The city of Mexicali was started in 1903. Its name is a mix of "Mexico" and "California." This is similar to the name of Calexico, California, which is just across the border.

What Mexicali Makes
Mexicali is home to more than 180 maquiladoras. These are factories that often import materials and equipment without taxes to make products for export. The city has grown very quickly, which has sometimes made it hard for its systems to keep up.
Keeping the City Clean
For many years, Mexico and the United States have worked together to improve Mexicali's sewer systems. These systems help carry away wastewater from homes and businesses.
In 2007, a new wastewater treatment plant called Las Arenitas opened. This plant helps clean the water before it goes back into the environment. It has greatly improved water quality in the area. However, sometimes the sewer system gets too full. When this happens, untreated water can sometimes flow into the river.
To help manage this, the Mexicali Public Service Commission started overseeing wastewater in 2016. This helps make sure the systems are working properly.
There's also a project called the New River Improvement Project. This project aims to clean up the New River, which flows through the area. In 2016, plans were approved to put parts of the river into an underground pipe. This would help keep the river cleaner.
Parts of Mexicali Municipality
The Mexicali Municipality is divided into 14 administrative areas called boroughs (or delegaciones in Spanish). The main city of Mexicali covers three of these boroughs. Each borough is further divided into smaller neighborhoods called colonias or farming communities called ejidos.
These boroughs provide important services to the community. They help with things like planning how the city grows, keeping official records, and managing public works. Each borough has a leader called a delegado.
Some of the boroughs in Mexicali Municipality are:
- Los Algodones: Located in the Valley Zone.
- Batáquez: Also in the Valley Zone.
- Cerro Prieto: Part of the Mexicali metropolitan area, in the Urban Zone.
- Ciudad Morelos: Sometimes called Cuervos, located in the Valley Zone.
- Colonias Nuevas: Also known as Km 57, in the Valley Zone.
- Progreso: Part of the Mexicali metropolitan area, in the Urban Zone.
- Guadalupe Victoria: Known as Km 43, in the Valley Zone.
- González Ortega: Also called Palaco, part of the Mexicali metropolitan area, in the Urban Zone.
