The Aznalcóllar Spill: A River's Challenge

In 1998, a big environmental problem happened near the town of Aznalcóllar in Spain. A company called Boliden-Apirsa, which was part of Boliden AB, had a special pond filled with toxic waste. This pond broke, and all the harmful waste spilled into the Agrio River. The Agrio River is the main stream that flows into the Guadiamar.

Both the Agrio River and the Guadiamar River became very polluted with heavy metals. These metals are dangerous for plants, animals, and people. It was a serious disaster for the environment.

To help the area recover, a special project was started. It was called the Corredor Verde del Guadiamar, which means the "Green Corridor of Guadiamar". This project created a wildlife corridor. A wildlife corridor is like a safe pathway for animals and plants. It connects the Sierra Morena mountains with the Doñana National Park. This helped bring back the natural balance and diversity of life in the area.
