The Guadiela is a river in Spain. It is an important branch of the Tagus river, joining it from the left side. The Guadiela is one of the main rivers that feed the upper part of the Tagus.

Where the Guadiela River Flows

The Guadiela river starts in a mountain range called the Serranía de Cuenca [es]. Its source is near a place called Cueva del Hierro, at a spot known as Fuente Pinilla.

The river flows for about 117 kilometers (73 miles). It travels from the east to the west. Most of its journey is through the Spanish province of Cuenca.

Joining the Tagus

The Guadiela river eventually flows into the Tagus river. This happens at the Bolarque reservoir. This reservoir is located right on the border between the provinces of Cuenca and Guadalajara.

Upstream, meaning further along the river before it reaches the Tagus, the Guadiela is held back by the Buendía reservoir [es] dam.

Other Rivers Joining the Guadiela

Several smaller rivers flow into the Guadiela, adding to its water. These include the Cuervo [es], the Guadamejud [es], the Mayor [es], and the Trabaque [es].

What's in a Name?

The name Guadiela has an interesting history. The first part, 'Guad', comes from an Arabic word. It means "river". The second part, '-iela', is a suffix that makes the word sound smaller or more charming, like a "little river". So, the name basically means "little river".
