The Gualeguay River near Larroque.

The Gualeguay River (in Spanish, Río Gualeguay) is an important river in the Entre Ríos Province of Argentina. It starts in the northern part of the province, between the cities of Federación and San José de Feliciano. The river then winds its way south-southwest through the middle of the province.

The Gualeguay River flows for about 350 to 375 kilometers (217 to 233 miles). Many smaller streams join it along its path. It passes by cities like Villaguay, Rosario del Tala, and Gualeguay. Finally, the river flows into the Río Paraná Ibicuy, which is a branch of the large Paraná River in the Paraná Delta.

About the Gualeguay River

The area where the Gualeguay River collects its water is called its drainage basin. This basin covers about 22,716 square kilometers (8,771 square miles). This is roughly one-third of the entire Entre Ríos province! This area is a lower part of the land, located between two systems of low hills. These hills are called the Cuchilla de Montiel (in the west) and the Cuchilla Grande (in the east).

In the 1960s, scientists measured how much water the river carried. On average, the Gualeguay River moved about 210 cubic meters (7,400 cubic feet) of water every second. This measurement shows how much water flows through the river at a certain point in time.
