Exploring Guane's Location

Guane is divided into several smaller areas, like neighborhoods or districts. These areas include Punta de La Sierra, Portales, Guane 1, Guane 2, Combate la Teneria, Isabel Rubio, Sabalo, and Mollna.

A Look at Guane's Past

The name "Guane" comes from an old Cuban Indigenous language. Before 1774, the area we now call Pinar del Río was known as Guane. It was the main city of the region back then.

The municipality used to have many more smaller parts, called barrios. Some of these old barrios were Cabo de San Antonio y La Fe, Catalina, Cortés, Hato de Guane, Isabel Rubio (Paso Real de Guane), Juan Gómez, La Grifa, Las Martinas, Los Acostas, Manuel Lazo (Cayuco), Portales, Pueblo, Punta de la Sierra, Sábalo and Tenería.

Guane was also an important place for people who moved to Cuba from the Philippines. These migrants were often called Chinos Manila by the local people. They worked on large tobacco farms, much like they did in their home country. In the Philippines, they came from areas like Ilocos Sur, Tarlac, Ilocos Norte, Cagayan and Isabela. During that time, a Spanish company called the Tabacalera controlled almost all of the tobacco trade.
