History of Guasipati
Guasipati was founded in 1757 as one of the missions in the Caroni and El Dorado areas. In the local Caribbean language, "guasipati" means "beautiful land."
At first, Guasipati did not become a very successful mission. Its soil was not very fertile, so other missions had to share food like meat and cassava with it.
Gold Discovery and Growth
Things changed for Guasipati in 1853. That year, very rich gold mines were found about 18 kilometers south of El Callao. This discovery brought new life to Guasipati.
Guasipati was then made the capital of the new Yuruari Territory. For about 30 years after the gold was found, many gold prospectors came to Guasipati. They came to ask for permission to mine the solid rock for gold.
Today, Guasipati is still a key center for Venezuela's gold and diamond mining areas. It is also a place for farming and logging. The town is known for its good Guyanese cheese, tropical fruits, and friendly people.
