Guatapurí is a small town in Colombia, located in the Department of Cesar. It is a special type of local district called a corregimiento within the larger municipality of Valledupar. Guatapurí is nestled high up in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains. It sits about 2,000 meters (or 6,560 feet) above sea level. This town is well-known because many of its residents are from the Kankuamos indigenous group. Other local people and mestizo groups (people of mixed European and indigenous heritage) also live here.
History of Guatapurí
For a very long time, Guatapurí has been home to indigenous people. Historically, the Arhuaco ethnic group, an Amerindian group (meaning native to the Americas), lived in this area. The name Guatapurí itself comes from an indigenous language. It means "cold water." This name also belongs to the Guatapuri River, which flows through the town's territory.
Economy and Local Products
The people of Guatapurí mostly earn their living through farming. They also create beautiful handmade art crafts. These crafts are often made by the indigenous communities living there.
Some of the main products grown or made in Guatapurí include:
- Panela: This is a type of unrefined whole cane sugar. It is very common in Latin America.
- Local Drinks: They make liquor from maize (corn) and sugar cane.
- Fique: This is a natural fiber. It comes from a plant and is used to make ropes, bags, and other woven items.
- Medicinal Plants: The area is rich in plants used for traditional medicine.
- Fruits and Vegetables: Many different local fruits and vegetables are grown.
- Cacao: This is the bean used to make chocolate.
- Coffee: Coffee beans are grown here and then sold in the nearby city of Valledupar.
