Discovering Guayabetal's Past
Guayabetal officially became a municipality on January 14, 1980. Before that, it was part of the Quetame area. The town grew a lot because of the road connecting it to Villavicencio.
Its first mayor was Manuel Gilberto González. The local church, Our Lady of Carmen, became a parish on March 29, 1949.
Important Events in History
On June 28, 1974, a big landslide happened near Guayabetal. This event, known as the Quebrada Blanca Tragedy, blocked the road to the Llano region. Many people were waiting for the road to clear when the landslide occurred.
In January 2018, a bridge under construction near Guayabetal collapsed. This sad event, called the Chirajara bridge collapse, caused damage and resulted in the loss of nine workers' lives.
Guayabetal's Economy
The economy of Guayabetal faces some challenges. Much of its land is rugged, which makes farming difficult. However, the town benefits from its location on the main road to Villavicencio.
Many local businesses, like restaurants, cafes, workshops, and places to stay, serve travelers on this road. This is the main way people in the town make money.
Farmers in rural areas mostly grow coffee and beans. They sometimes struggle to sell their products at fair prices. This is because middlemen often buy their goods cheaply.
