Quetame is a town and a municipality in Colombia. It is located in the Eastern Province of the Cundinamarca department. The main part of Quetame is about 62 kilometers (38 miles) from Bogotá, the capital city. It sits at an altitude of 1,496 meters (4,908 feet) above sea level.

Quetame shares its borders with several other places. To the north, it borders Fómeque. To the west, it borders Fosca and Cáqueza. The Meta department is to its east, and Guayabetal is to its south.

What Does Quetame Mean?

The name Quetame comes from the Chibcha language. It means "Our farmfields on the mountains." This name tells us a lot about the area's history and its connection to farming.

A Look Back in Time

Early Inhabitants

Before the Spanish arrived, the area of Quetame was home to the Muisca. These were indigenous people who lived in the central highlands of Colombia. The Muisca of Quetame were loyal to the cacique (a local chief) of Ubaque.

Founding of Modern Quetame

The modern town of Quetame was officially started on June 26, 1826. It was founded by a person named Josè Joaquin Guarín. This marked the beginning of Quetame as we know it today.

The 2008 Earthquake

On May 24, 2008, Quetame was the epicentre (the point on the Earth's surface directly above where an earthquake starts) of a magnitude 5.5 earthquake. This earthquake caused a lot of damage. Sadly, at least 3 people died. About 40% of the buildings in the village were destroyed. People in Bogotá and Villavicencio also felt the shaking from this earthquake.
