Guibert's Early Life and Education
Guibert was born around the year 1125 in a place called Brabant. He likely went to school at the abbey of Gembloux, which was a monastery. For some time, he lived and studied at the abbey of St. Martin.
Working with Hildegard of Bingen
Around 1176, Guibert started writing letters to Hildegard of Bingen. She was a very well-known writer, composer, and mystic. In 1177, Hildegard asked Guibert to come and be her secretary.
Guibert's own abbot, who was the head of his monastery, wasn't sure about letting him go. But another abbot, named Philippe from Park Abbey, helped make it happen. Guibert moved to Rupertsberg, where Hildegard lived. He stayed there until shortly after she passed away in 1179. While he was there, he not only helped Hildegard with her writing but also served as a priest for the nuns at the abbey.
Challenges and New Roles
In 1180, Guibert met a poet named Joseph of Exeter. Joseph was studying in a town called Jodoigne. Some of the letters they wrote to each other can still be read today.
A few years later, in 1185, a big problem happened. There was a fight between the Count of Namur and Baldwin V, Count of Hainaut. The Count of Namur attacked Gembloux, and a fire broke out in the monastery. Sadly, almost all of Guibert's writings were destroyed in this fire.
Guibert really admired a saint named Martin of Tours. After the fire, he spent about a year in Tours. He worked to rewrite a special book about St. Martin's life that had been lost in the fire.
Becoming an Abbot and Later Years
Guibert was chosen to be the abbot of Florennes Abbey from 1188 to 1190. Later, in 1194, he became the abbot of the Gembloux monastery. He was a wise leader for these communities.
Around 1204, Guibert decided to step down from his role as abbot. He moved back to Florennes so he could spend more time on his writing. He passed away on February 22, 1208.
Guibert's Writings
Guibert wrote many important works. These included a poem about St. Martin, a book about the life of St. Hildegard, and many letters. Most of his letters have been published, so people can read them.
His letters are very helpful for understanding history. They tell us about the later years of Hildegard's life, the history of Gembloux, and information about churches in Tours, among other things.
