Guilford is a small, unincorporated community in Dearborn County, Indiana. This means it's not a city or town with its own government, but rather part of York Township. Guilford is located where different parts of Tanners Creek meet. In 1850, the area was planned out to take advantage of a new railroad coming through. This made Guilford a great spot for farmers and merchants to ship their goods.
History of Guilford
Guilford was officially established in 1850. Its name might have come from a place called Guildford in England.
Guilford is home to the very last covered bridge in Dearborn County. In 1879, a famous bridge-building company, Archibald M. Kennedy and Sons, was hired to build a modern covered bridge. By 1961, there were plans to replace this old bridge with a stronger concrete one. However, people in the county worked together to save it! They raised money and moved the bridge to a new spot. Today, it's the main attraction at the Guilford Covered Bridge Park. You can find it where Indiana State Route 1 and York Ridge meet.
