Guilford Lake is a small community in northeastern Ohio, United States. It's known as a census-designated place, which means it's an area identified for population counting, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. The community is built around the beautiful Guilford Lake itself, which is a man-made lake. In 2020, about 1,188 people lived here.

Guilford Lake was first created in 1834. It was built as a special water storage area, called a "feeder reservoir," for the Sandy and Beaver Canal. Canals are man-made waterways that allow boats to travel across land. This lake helped keep the canal full of water so boats could move easily. The lake was named after Edward H. Gill, who was the chief engineer for the canal company.

From Canal to Farmland

After a while, canals became less important for transportation. People started using trains and roads more. When the canal era ended, local farmers decided to use the land differently. They broke the dam that held the lake's water, which drained the lake. The bottom of the lake became very fertile farmland, perfect for growing crops.

Becoming a State Park

Years later, in 1932, a new dam was built, and the lake was refilled. This brought the lake back to life. Then, in 1949, the area around Guilford Lake was officially made a state park. This means it's a protected area where people can enjoy nature and outdoor activities. Guilford Lake was first recognized as a census-designated place for the 2020 U.S. Census.
