Guilhem Guirado's Rugby Journey

Starting Out in Rugby

Guilhem Guirado began his professional rugby journey with Perpignan in 2005. Before that, he played for an amateur junior team called Arles-sur-Tech. His talent was quickly noticed, and in 2006, he was chosen to play for the French Under-21 team.

He played in all the matches during the 2006 Under 21 Rugby World Championship. This included the final game against South Africa.

Winning Titles with Clubs

Three years later, in the 2008–09 Top 14 season, Guirado helped his club, Perpignan, win the Top 14 title. This is the top rugby championship in France. They beat Clermont with a score of 22–13. The next year, Perpignan reached the final again but lost to Clermont.

In 2014, Guirado moved to Toulon, a very strong team that had won both European and French championships. He made his first appearance for Toulon against Bayonne, and Toulon won 29–15. With Toulon, he won the Champions Cup in 2015. This is a major European club competition.

Later in his career, he joined Montpellier. Here, he continued his winning ways, helping the team secure another Top 14 title in 2022. He also won the Challenge Cup with Montpellier in 2021.

Playing for the French National Team

Guirado's great performance in the 2008–09 season led to his selection for the French national side. He earned his first cap, which means his first game for the national team, on 9 March 2008. He came off the bench in a match against Italy, which France won 25–13.

His first time starting a game for France was his sixth cap, playing as a hooker against Fiji in 2010. He was also part of the French team that reached the final of the 2011 Rugby World Cup. They were runners-up to the All Blacks, a very strong team. Guirado played in one game during that World Cup, against Canada.

He also played in the 2015 Rugby World Cup. In this tournament, France lost to New Zealand in the quarter-finals.

Becoming Captain of France

In 2015, Guilhem Guirado was chosen to be the captain of the French national team by the new coach, Guy Novès. He was known for his excellent play and his professional attitude. The coach praised him highly, saying he was likely to remain captain for a long time.
