Guillemette du Luys facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Guillemette du Luys was a French surgeon who worked for King Louis XI of France around the year 1479. She was one of only two women known to have been royal doctors in France during that time.

Guillemette du Luys was officially recorded as a surgeon for the king in 1479. Her job was quite special because it was very unusual for a woman to be a surgeon in those days.

A Rare Woman in Medicine

In the 13th century, there were many women doctors in Paris. However, by the mid-1300s, new laws in countries like France, England, and Spain made it much harder for women to practice medicine. These laws limited what women could do in the medical field.

Because of these strict rules, Guillemette du Luys was one of the very few women surgeons known in Paris after the early 1400s. Another woman, named Peretta Peronne, had faced legal trouble for practicing medicine without permission around that time.

Guillemette du Luys was almost the only woman doctor in France during her time. The only other known female doctor was Martinette, who was allowed to treat people who were poor in the city of Dijon. This shows how rare and important Guillemette du Luys's position was as a royal surgeon.
