About the Gulf Toadfish
Gulf toadfish usually weigh about 2 to 3 pounds (0.91 to 1.36 kg). They are often 11 to 14 inches (28 to 36 cm) long. Sometimes, smaller ones are caught. These smaller fish might weigh around 0.25 pounds (110 g). They can be about 4 to 5 inches (10 to 13 cm) in length.
Where They Live
The Gulf toadfish lives in the Gulf of Mexico. They are often found close to shore. You can spot them around bridges and other structures. This includes things like pilings, which are posts that support docks. They like shallow areas. These spots are usually where many smaller baitfish live.
What They Eat
The Gulf toadfish is an opportunistic feeder. This means it eats whatever it can find easily. They usually feed on the bottom of the water. They like to stay near places with lots of baitfish. This way, they can find food without having to swim far.
Toadfish and Fishing
Anglers, or people who fish, often catch Gulf toadfish. These fish are known for eating bait meant for other fish. They can be a bit of a nuisance to anglers. Gulf toadfish will readily eat many types of bait. They especially like larger pieces of bait. This includes things like cut squid or frozen fish.
Special Skin Coating
Gulf toadfish have a slimy coating on their skin. This slime can cause a slight irritation if you touch it. It is a natural part of their defense.
As Food for Humans
People rarely eat Gulf toadfish. Not much is known about how they taste. Because they have a special slime on their skin, some people think they might not be good to eat.
