Gull Lake (which means Lago Gaviota in Spanish) is a small lake found on South Georgia. It's about 0.15 nautical miles (0.3 km) wide and is located very close to the southwest shore of King Edward Cove. It's also about 0.5 nautical miles (1 km) south of the old whaling station at Grytviken.
How Gull Lake Got Its Name
The lake was first explored and given a name by A. Szielasko in 1906. He called it "Möwensee" or "Moven See," which means "Gull Lake" in German.
Later, in 1947, an American scientist named Robert Cushman Murphy used the English name "Gull Lake." He wrote about his visit to the lake in November 1912.
The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee officially suggested using the name "Gull Lake" in 1954, and it was approved. This is the name we use today.
