Your gums, also known as gingiva, are the soft, pink tissue inside your mouth. They cover the bones of your jaw (the mandible and maxilla). Gums form a tight seal around your teeth, helping to keep them safe and in place. They are a very important part of your mouth's health!

What Healthy Gums Look Like
Healthy gums are super important for a healthy smile. Here's how you can tell if your gums are in good shape:
Color of Healthy Gums
Healthy gums are usually a pretty coral pink color. If your gums look red, white, or blue, it might mean something is wrong. For example, red gums can be a sign of gingivitis, which is when your gums get swollen and irritated.
Shape of Healthy Gums
Healthy gums fit snugly around each tooth. They fill the spaces between your teeth, looking smooth and firm. They don't look puffy or swollen.
Texture of Healthy Gums
When your gums are healthy, they feel firm and don't wiggle around much. They are not soft or squishy.
How Healthy Gums React
Healthy gums usually don't bleed or hurt when you brush your teeth or eat. If your gums bleed easily, it could be a sign of a problem.
Keeping Your Gums Healthy
Taking care of your gums is just as important as taking care of your teeth!
- Brush your teeth at least twice a day for two minutes each time. Make sure to brush gently along your gum line.
- Floss daily to remove food bits and plaque from between your teeth and under your gums.
- Visit your dentist regularly for check-ups and cleanings. They can spot problems early and help keep your gums healthy.
- Eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables. This helps keep your whole body, including your gums, strong.
