Gunniopsis rodwayi is a special type of succulent plant. Succulents are plants that store water in their leaves or stems, like cacti! This plant belongs to the Aizoaceae family, also known as the iceplant family. It is found only in Western Australia, which means it is endemic to that area.

Discovering Gunniopsis rodwayi

This plant is an annual herb. This means it completes its whole life cycle in one year. It can grow either straight up (erect) or spread out along the ground (prostrate). It usually reaches a height of about 1 to 20 centimeters (0.4 to 7.9 inches).

When Does It Bloom?

Gunniopsis rodwayi produces pretty white flowers. You can see these flowers between August and December. This is during the spring and early summer in Western Australia.

Where Does It Live?

This plant loves salty places! You can find it growing around salt lakes and other areas with salty soil. It grows in different types of soil, including sandy, loamy, or clay soils.

It is spread out across several regions in Western Australia. These areas include the Mid West, the Wheatbelt, and the Goldfields-Esperance regions.

How It Got Its Name

The story of Gunniopsis rodwayi's name is quite interesting! A botanist named Alfred James Ewart first described this plant in 1908. He called it Aizoon rodwayi. He wrote about it in his work called Contributions to the Flora of Australia.

Later, in 1930, another botanist named C.A. Gardner reclassified the plant. He moved it into the Gunniopsis group of plants. This is how it got its current scientific name, Gunniopsis rodwayi.
