Guru Somasundaram is an actor from India. He acts in movies made in the Tamil and Malayalam languages. He first appeared in the movie Aaranya Kaandam in 2011. People really liked his acting in that film.

He also acted in other popular Tamil movies like Pandiya Naadu (2013), Jigarthanda (2014), and Joker (2016). He became very famous for playing Shibu, a super villain, in the 2021 Malayalam movie Minnal Murali, which you can watch on Netflix.

Early Life and Theatre Days

Guru Somasundaram was born on September 3, 1975. He joined a well-known Tamil theatre group called Koothu-P-Pattarai. He performed in plays with this group from 2002 to 2011.

In 2003, a director named Thiagarajan Kumararaja saw him acting in a play. Thiagarajan was so impressed that he offered Guru Somasundaram a chance to act in a future movie.

Becoming a Film Star

In 2008, director Thiagarajan Kumararaja offered Guru Somasundaram a role in his movie Aaranya Kaandam. Guru Somasundaram played a character named Kaalaiyan. He worked hard for the role, losing seven kilograms and training for the film.

When the movie came out in 2011, it won two National Film Awards. Critics also highly praised Guru Somasundaram's acting. One critic said his performance was "wonderful to behold." Another said he gave a "superior" performance. After seeing his work, famous director Mani Ratnam cast him in a small role in the movie Kadal (2013).

Venturing into Malayalam Cinema

After leaving Koothu-P-Pattarai, Guru Somasundaram worked as a freelance theatre actor. He then started acting in Malayalam movies. His first Malayalam film was 5 Sundarikal (2013), where he played a photographer. He was very impressed by the story told by Shyju Khaled, which made him want to join the film.

Later that year, he played an important role in Suseenthiran's popular movie Pandiya Naadu. He played the brother of the main character, played by Vishal. He also appeared in a short silent film called The Lost Paradise. In this film, he played a prisoner returning home after fifteen years.

Notable Roles and Recognition

Guru Somasundaram also received praise for his role as an acting coach in Karthik Subbaraj's gangster film Jigarthanda (2014). In this movie, he taught acting to the character played by Bobby Simha. Interestingly, Guru Somasundaram had actually trained Bobby Simha in acting in real life during their theatre days.

He is also well-known for playing a district collector in the 2019 Tamil movie Petta. This film starred the superstar Rajinikanth in the main role.
